Modelling carbon sequestration potential of Czech agricultural soils
Ongoing since 2023

THE CHALLENGE
Czechia has lacked region-specific evidence for systematic carbon farming implementation and policy design. With carbon farming developing mainly through private initiatives, farmers face uncertainty around credibility, rules, and long-term stability without a clearer national approach.
WHAT WE DID
We contributed to development and adoption of the EPIC-IIASA CZ modelling platform for Czech conditions and ran agronomic and climate scenarios to simulate long-term changes in soil organic carbon (0–30 cm). Results were processed into maps and data outputs to support decision-making and evaluation of management options.
OUTCOMES & IMPACT
The project provides region-specific maps and data on carbon sequestration potential in Czech arable soils—an expert evidence base for more credible carbon farming strategies, guidance, and policy frameworks.
