Adapting a sustainability & ecosystem services valuation tool for Czechia and Slovakia

12/2025 – 06/2026 (tool adaptation and pilot assessments)

The Challenge

Farmers create major benefits for soil, biodiversity, water and rural communities, but these “public goods” are still poorly recognised financially. The missing piece in Czechia (and Slovakia) is a practical, credible way to measure sustainability performance and translate it into a basis for fair remuneration.

Whate We Did

Together with Regionalwert / AgriMetrix partners, Czech Organics is adapting the AgriMetrix sustainability performance calculator to Czech and Slovak conditions—covering performance indicators, thresholds, and monetisation values so the system reflects local farming reality.

We are running a series of thematic workshops to co-design the tool with a mixed expert group (farmers, researchers, NGOs and other stakeholders):

  • Workshop 1 (in person): 26 Feb 2026, Prague (CZU) — arable production, soil fertility, biodiversity, climate & water

  • Workshop 2 (online): 12 Mar 2026 — social topics and regional economy

  • Workshop 3: 26 Mar 2026 — production-type working groups (vegetables, viticulture, livestock)

After the workshops, we move into practical testing through individual farm assessments (May–June 2026) using available farm data, to check usability and calibrate values before rollout.

Outcomes & Impact

This project creates a Czech- and Slovak-ready version of AgriMetrix: a farmer-informed set of indicators and valuation rules that can be used consistently across farms and production types. The key impact is strategic and practical: it builds the missing bridge between “good farming” and “fair pay” by producing a credible, transparent basis for remunerating ecosystem services—soil health, water retention, biodiversity, climate resilience and social contributions—grounded in real-world farm conditions.By testing the approach directly with farms in 2026, we also identify where and how the tool can scale (which farm types, what data is needed, and what level of effort is realistic), making it ready for wider adoption in advisory work, value chains and policy instruments.
